Factory Noise Reduction with a Sound Barrier
Project Summary
DECIBEL Africa was engaged in tackling a critical noise issue at a factory in Linbro Park, Johannesburg, where six heavy-duty industrial generators were causing significant disturbances in the surrounding area. The noise problem escalated to the Department of Environmental Health, leading to the involvement of independent acoustic specialists. Their environmental noise survey recommended a necessary reduction of 20dB to comply with legal noise levels for industrial areas. DECIBEL Africa, in collaboration with DECIBEL International and Armadillo Engineering, delivered a solution that not only met but exceeded expectations by completing the project ahead of schedule and achieving the desired noise reduction.
Scope of Work
- Conducted an environmental noise survey with independent specialists.
- Prepared an acoustic simulation to determine optimal noise reduction strategy.
- Designed a custom outdoor noise barrier using DECIBEL's PZP panels with 200mm thickness.
- Coordinated engineering and construction efforts with Armadillo Engineering.
- Installed the noise barrier within 4 weeks, ahead of the 6-7 week schedule.
- Verified the noise reduction achievement of 20dB upon project completion.
Challenge
The primary challenge was to reduce the noise levels generated by six heavy-duty industrial generators at the Linbro Park factory. The noise had escalated to the point of causing community complaints, leading to an intervention by the Department of Environmental Health. The legal requirement was a reduction of 20dB to bring the noise levels within acceptable limits for an industrial area. Additionally, the project needed to be completed swiftly to mitigate further disturbances and legal consequences.
Solution
To address the noise issue, DECIBEL Africa, with the support of DECIBEL International, conducted an acoustic simulation that established the optimal noise barrier design. The solution involved the use of DECIBEL's PZP panels, specifically engineered for this project with an added thickness of 200mm to enhance noise attenuation. The installation was carried out by Armadillo Engineering, who managed to complete the construction in under 4 weeks, significantly ahead of the expected 6-7 week timeframe. This rapid execution was crucial in preventing ongoing disruptions and resolving the noise complaints efficiently.
Result
The installation of the custom noise barrier resulted in a remarkable 20dB reduction in noise levels, effectively bringing the factory's operations into compliance with legal standards. The successful implementation of the project not only satisfied the client but also addressed the concerns of the local community. The completion of the project ahead of schedule underscored the efficiency and expertise of DECIBEL Africa and its partners, ensuring a positive outcome for all stakeholders involved. The handover ceremony, attended by both the client and noise complainants, confirmed the success of the project, with all parties expressing their satisfaction with the results.
