Project Overview

Plasser & Theurer, a renowned name in railway track construction and maintenance, sought a solution to address the excessive noise generated by a crosscut saw located in their Plant P09 workshop, which was adjacent to an office wing. The noise significantly impacted the concentration levels of the office staff and hindered communication within the workshop, where workers had to wear hearing protection. DECIBEL was contacted to provide an effective noise insulation solution.

Challenge

The crosscut saw, producing around 105dB(A), was relocated close to an office wing. Despite a 25cm thick concrete wall separating the machine from the office, noise transmission led to background noise levels of 73dB(A) in the office—too high for a productive work environment. The workshop employees also faced communication difficulties due to mandatory hearing protection, which further disrupted workflow. Plasser & Theurer required a solution that not only minimised noise but also fits seamlessly into their existing operations without causing interruptions.


Scope of Work

  • Designing and installing a custom-built soundproof enclosure around the crosscut saw.
  • Ensuring that operational requirements, such as easy access and visibility for staff, were fully considered.
  • Integrating ventilation and soundproofing systems within the enclosure to manage airflow and maintain comfortable working temperatures.

Solution

After evaluating various noise reduction approaches, including ceiling baffles and acoustic cladding, the most effective solution was a custom-designed acoustic enclosure. DECIBEL’s team created an enclosure that featured a two-part sliding door system with automated operation, allowing for easy access while maintaining safety and operational efficiency. Transparent vision windows ensured that staff could monitor the machinery without entering the enclosure, ensuring smooth operation.

Ventilation systems with integrated attenuators were installed to manage airflow, ensuring that the space remained cool even during summer months. The installation process was completed in less than 3 days, keeping operational disruption to a minimum.
The custom-made enclosure utilised DECIBEL’s Mute acoustic panels and incorporated additional sound insulation on both the walls and ceiling to deliver maximum noise reduction.

Effective Noise Control for Enhanced Productivity

The implementation of this solution reduced the noise levels around the crosscut saw from 105dB(A) to 73dB(A), and noise in the Operations office dropped to 38dB(A). This dramatic reduction not only provided a more comfortable environment for the office staff but also improved communication and overall productivity in the workshop. The speed of installation and the acoustic performance of the enclosure impressed Plasser & Theurer, who were highly satisfied with the final outcome.
